How to Preserve Your Fabric Furniture

Fluff, flip and rotate your cushions.

Fluff every few days for a bright, neat look.

If your furniture has loose, reversible cushions, this part is easy. Simply remove the cushions and knead the padding with your hands to redistribute it evenly.

If your cushions are attached to your furniture, look for a zipper at the bottom of each cushion and pull it open to evenly redistribute the padding inside.

If you don’t find a zipper, then loosen or crumple the connected cushions and smooth the surface, tucking the excess covering material into the sides or back.

Feather/down blend cushions may require more frequent maintenance, but will bounce back easily.

Don’t forget the pillows! They are the perfect finishing touch and also need to be fluffed regularly.

Turn and rotate weekly.

Turn your cushions regularly to ensure that both sides develop even wear over time. Rotate cushion positions so that each cushion gets the same amount of “sit time”.

Tidy up the seams. Make sure your seams and seam allowances are neat and consistent to keep them looking uncluttered.

Avoid sunlight whenever possible. The harsh rays of the sun can make fabric upholstery look dull over time. Some fabrics (such as polyester blends) are stretchy, but to ensure your pieces don’t fade quickly, we recommend rotating cushions frequently.

Eliminate pilling. Pilling is a normal occurrence and does not indicate excessive wear. It is caused by frictional “balling” of loose fibers.

To eliminate it, you need an easy-to-use, inexpensive tool to remove excess fibers from the surface of the fabric, either a shaver or a deburrer. Regular use will ward off pilling and will not affect the quality or durability of the fabric.

Eliminate stains and odors. We recommend using Guardsman’s Stain and Odor Eliminator Spray to clean products with a cleaning code of S or X, and using a can of Fabric Protection Spray on all products to prevent stains.

How to Clean Your Leather Furniture

Clean the leather regularly with a soft cloth.

Spot clean by rubbing light stains with a damp towel and mild soap.

For regular cleaning, vacuum frequently with a soft brush attachment.

Wipe up spills immediately with a clean cloth or sponge and let them air dry. And be patient – never use a hair dryer.

We recommend using Guardsman products to remove stains.

How to Preserve Your Leather Furniture

Protect the leather from direct sunlight to avoid fading.

Keep your pet’s nails trimmed regularly to prevent them from scratching and tearing the leather.

Consider using a humidifier to avoid excessive dryness.

Remove cushions from their zippered enclosures and fluff and rotate them to ensure they last longer.

Avoid contact between leather and hair products or hand sanitizers. The chemicals in these products can damage the protective surface of the leather over time, causing discoloration and fading.

Wood Furniture

Wooden furniture is relatively sturdy, but these surface areas can often be contaminated with food and drink, posing a threat to the beauty of the wood. To prevent these messes in your life, follow these basic guidelines.

How to Clean Your Wood Furniture

To clean wood surfaces, we recommend Guardsman products. These products are safe and effective when used as directed.

If desired, dust with a clean soft cloth dampened with Furniture Polish. When applying furniture polish, use a light application with a tiny amount.

Any furniture polish used for the first time should be tested in a darker area and tested OK before continuing. Be especially careful if your furniture has a low gloss, as furniture polish can change the appearance of your woodwork.

While you should avoid using water to clean wood, you can use water and a mild soap to treat dense spots. Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth immediately after scrubbing. Prolonged exposure to moisture can damage the surface of the wood.

How to Preserve Your Wood Furniture

Use coasters, liners or placemats between wood surfaces and items to prevent scratching or warping.

Dust wood furniture weekly to prevent dust buildup that can lead to fine scratches that can occur when everyday items come in contact with the surface. For best results, be sure to wipe in the direction of the wood grain when dusting.

Avoid exposing wooden furniture to strong sunlight to prevent fading of the finish.

Avoid placing heat sources, such as hot plates, cutlery and other hot items, directly on wooden furniture. Always use triangular boards and protective placemats to protect surfaces and prevent damage to the wood substrate. The number one cause of wood damage is from hot pizza boxes.

Your furniture should lie flat on the floor to avoid unnecessary stress or damage to doors and drawers.

Always wipe off moisture promptly with a dry, soft cloth.

Other Materials

How to Care for Glass Furniture

Not only can glass furniture add a touch of brightness to your space, this material has many other style advantages. Adding a glass table to your space can make your room look larger and more airy than a traditional wooden table.

Plus, a glass table top can protect existing wood furniture from stains, scratches and even UV damage.

It is also one of the easiest materials to care for. Just follow these tips and your glass furniture will always look as good as new.

To dust, use a soft, clean cloth.

When cleaning, use a glass cleaner to avoid unsightly streaks. If your glass is framed by wood, make sure the glass cleaner does not come in contact with the wood.

To prevent breakage, try not to place heavy objects or accessories on the edges of the glass.

Always use coasters and wipe up any spills promptly.

Be careful when placing sharp objects, such as keys, on the glass tabletop to prevent scratches.

How to Care for Concrete Furniture

Concrete tabletops are beautiful and sturdy and can infuse your space with modern style. However, due to the porous nature of the material, concrete tabletops are easily stained and should be sealed every few years to maintain their durability and visual appeal.

In addition, even though concrete is a very hard material, it is still important to avoid chipping and scratching the surface.

To ensure you get the most out of your concrete furniture, we recommend following these tips

Wipe off any spills immediately to avoid moisture absorption and stains.

To prevent scratches and chips, do not drag coarse objects across the tabletop. Also, avoid accidentally hitting the edge of the tabletop.

Use felt pads on the bottom of some debris or other objects that will be on the tabletop for an extended period of time.

Avoid contact with acidic substances such as citrus, olive oil or cleaners containing citrus ingredients as they may damage your desktop sealer.

To avoid structural damage, we recommend that you do not sit or stand on your tabletop.

When cleaning, we recommend using a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft sponge or towel. Many times, water and a sponge alone are sufficient to clean the surface, but if you have oily spills or spots, a mixture of water and a mild detergent will do the trick.

How to Care for Metal Furniture

Metal is another option for a very durable furniture material. It also offers several style options, from modern and contemporary to transitional and traditional styles.

Here are some tips to make sure your metal furniture lasts for years to come

For everyday spills or condensation, wipe with a clean cloth immediately.

To maintain the shine of your surfaces, dust your furniture once a week with a clean, dry cloth.

For stain cleaning, wipe away dirt and debris with a solution of mild detergent, water and a soft bristle brush.

Do not use bleach or any cleaning agents containing sulfuric or hydrochloric acid.

Do not use steel wool or scouring pads as these may scratch the surface.

Use coasters and placemats to prevent marks, stains and scratches.

How to Care for Marble Furniture

Marble and stone table tops are sure to bring a gorgeous, upscale style to your space. And because of the natural differences in marble, each piece is unique. However, it is a soft and porous material that can easily be stained, scratched and scuffed.

To prevent damage and keep your marble looking as good as new, your tabletop should be sealed once a year.

For general maintenance and care, follow these simple tips to protect your marble tabletop

Wipe with a clean, soft cloth to immediately eliminate spills from the surface.

To prevent water rings and other marks, always use coasters or pads when placing cups, glassware and hot dishes on the tabletop.

Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Dust the surface with a soft cloth once or twice a week.

Wash marble regularly with a cloth and warm water, using a small amount of mild detergent if necessary. Ensure that all soap is removed from the surface with a damp cloth. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Outdoor Furniture

For Upholstery

Keep furniture dry when not in use; wipe up spills with a dry cloth and avoid using harsh cleaners and abrasives.

To prolong the life of cushions, keep them free of dust or leaves. To prevent mold and mildew, put the cushion up and dry it completely before storing.

Cover or store indoors when not in use for long periods of time or in inclement weather.

Store cushions separately from furniture to prevent possible moisture transfer. Make sure furniture is completely dry before covering.

For Teak

Natural teak will have an oily surface similar to a watermark. These can be removed by gently washing with a mild soap and a soft damp cloth.

If the furniture is near the ocean, rinse it with water weekly to remove any salt.

If left in cold conditions, cracks may appear. To prevent this, clean thoroughly and store in a dry place during the winter. If this is not possible, use an outdoor furniture cover.

As natural teak ages, it will take on a silvery gray sheen. If you favor warmer tones, clean your furniture regularly and protect it with teak oil. If it starts to appear bronzed, sand it down with fine sandpaper.

If using teak oil, be sure to apply it every few months to maintain the finish and quality of the wood.

Do not allow water to remain on the surface of the furniture.

Cover or store indoors when not in use for long periods of time or during inclement weather.

For Eucalyptus

Natural eucalyptus can have oil stains that resemble watermarks that surface. These can be removed by gently washing with a mild soap and a soft, damp cloth.

Hairline cracks may appear, similar to the appearance of natural, beautifully aged stone. This cracking will not affect the use or integrity of the table.

Avoid hitting the table top with other objects as this may cause cracks in the surface.

Stone is very porous and if spills are not cleaned, the stone will gradually absorb liquids.

Stone should be cleaned regularly to remove abrasives from its surface.
